Since only about 1.6 of NCAA football players and 1.2% of NCAA basketball players make it to the NFL, >98% are making out pretty well.

Those who wish to make money without the NCAA scholarship, are free to do so. (there are dozens of professional alternatives to the NFL, NBA & NHL that allow an athlete to bypass college)
