The Playoff is a disaster and a total failure. Adding more teams is just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
You are right about we need to have fewer postseason games to generate more interest in the games. They have added too many bowl games and have diluted the meaning of going to a bowl. It used to be the reward for a pretty good season, now going .500 is good enough. It's not healthy for the game. Nobody wants to watch two .500 teams play, unless you are a fan of one of the teams. About 12-15 bowls would be the right number, IMO. And no bowl alliances. Each bowl picks whatever teams it wants, regardless of conference affiliation.
As far as crowing a national champion, the old bowl system was best. I don't get the fascination of a national championship game and I don't think it is necessary. Arguing over who the champion was is part of the fun. Every once in awhile, if we have a split national champion, that's OK too.
