The BIG conference includes the University of Chicago which to my knowledge has no intercollegiate athletic programs.
The original Big Ten schools plus the University of Chicago formed and operate an academic organization that seeks to foster academic and research cooperation between the member schools. It particularly sought to develop and foster joint research efforts. I.e. multiple Big Ten schools would jointly seek a research grant and jointly perform the required research.
The organization was for many years called the Committee on Institutional Cooperation and was often referred to as the 800 pound gorilla among American Higher Education Organizations. It's current name is the Big Ten Alliance.
The SEC has a similar organization and the SEC is not strictly just an athletic conference. The organization's purpose is to further cooperation, joint efforts, etc. between the SEC members.
