tax question on cryptocurrency

If I buy and sell bitcoin, is that subject to taxes as an investment, or is that just like regular property?

I know you can do index funds (obviously that is an investment), but what is best way to buy those.

Is there a list somewhere of these and how to get...or a crypto index that would follow most of them?
