Why does this surprise so many people? Up until

very recently it was socially unacceptable and sometimes even dangerous to be a gay man. Lifelong bachelors were assumed to be gay and faced the same problems.
The priesthood was a place where a gay man could go to live out his life without having to face constant scrutiny. Most that chose that life and were able accept the limitations that came with it. But Many were unable to do so and their easy access to alter boys led to the issues that have been exposed.
I am not excusing what they did, it was horrid and doubly so when you think of the trust they had and the views they claimed to live by. But how can anyone really be surprised by the outcome?
