threads students claiming to be classmates and/or friends of the Chinese student have said that he wasn't offended and even made comments on their virtual classroom (Blackboard or Canvas or whatever they use) that he thought it was funny. Also, he wasn't the one who reported it.

The university has "relieved him of teaching duties", that much is official, at least. It will be interested to see what happens from here.
