Basically the same thing on a smaller scale. A wildly unqualified person was put in a role they couldn't possibly do because a subset of grossly mis-informed people believed that he could for reasons outside the bounds of reality. When said person started failing to spectacular and unprecedented degrees wild conspiracy theories were concocted to explain away the incompetence and place the blame elsewhere. And still the original base stuck by the belief they were just on the precipice of turning things around in the face of all evidence to the contrary when it has demonstratively been proven the candidate possessed none of the required skill set, had no work ethic or passion for the job, and was only interested in using it for self financial interests. Things reached levels of terrible previously thought impossible, even when factoring in all the known original limitations. And all that was left behind was a smoldering rubble of a program/country to be attempted to be rebuilt, but the crater was too vast.
