If they opt out and have a redshirt available, it should count as a redshirt year. IMO, no players should be granted an extra year of eligibility. Scholarships are year by year for non athletic items. So if you opt out, its not a guarantee that you will still be on the team. This is one thing the PAC players are arguing for. IMO, if you opt out and have eligibility remaining, there shouldn't be a reason to take away the scholarship.
The one thing the NCAA screwed up on was allowing spring seniors an extra year. This opens the door for fall. Only difference is if the teams actually play. If they play the season at all, they shouldn't allow an extra year of eligibility. If they don't play at all, I can see the NCAA allowing it. I am still against it, but can understand that scenario over straight opting out.
