Football directly and indirectly is the major source of revenue for every SEC program.
It produces revenue through: (1) ticket sales and game revenue, (2) the SEC distribution which derives its revenue primarily from TV contracts (i.e. CBS and SECN) and bowl appearance and (3) donations which are largely driven by football (i.e. required donations to purchase prime football tickets. I have not seen any specific numbers, but I would suggest the football probably accounts for 75% or more of every SEC's athletic program's revenue. Not playing blows a major hole in the AD's budgets.
Further, every SEC school is faced with covering its Athletic Department's red ink at a time when other revenue sources, i.e. student tuition, fees, etc. are being hit by Covid 19.
Playing an SEC only schedule gives the conference some control over testing and virus control measures of every team on the schedule of every team.
Also, iF the season is moved to the spring, it assures every conference team has a full schedule and all of the opponents on the schedule are relatively to very attractive.
