Furthermore, the McCloskeys didn't shoot or anything. Just made it known that the mob of people that just broke down a gate and entered upon private, non-public property that they should not come any further.

Seeing that gas stations and other buildings had been set ablaze throughout St. Louis, they were well within a normal amount of fear and acted appropriately.

If a mob was outside your house but not an inch onto your property, you'd be within your rights to show or even point a gun and tell them to not come any further.
