Does having criminal record make you a bad person?

Does being a law abiding citizen make you a good person? The answer may seem simple, but I argue it’s much more complex than that. Legality and morality are often used interchangeably but are quite different. For example slavery was legal for over 2 hundred years. The rape, murder, and torture of a group of people was legal but was not the right thing to do. Going with more recent times, 5 years ago a person selling small quantities of marijuana on the street was considered a dangerous person that was harming people, but now marijuana dispensaries are a multi billion dollar business, selling the same product. The product sold didn’t change. The law changed. If you and I both go home and beat our wives, you do it one time and your wife presses charges, and you get convicted, but my wife hides it and it continues for many years, you are legally the criminal and I’m not. Legal and moral are different.
