For one, Callahan came in and scrapped the option game, which was losing effectiveness in the college game anyway. However, NU had a lot of success recruiting the beef in Nebraska needed for that type of offense, which is one of the reasons they excelled at it. Another reason was that high school teams across the state used the same offense. Look at Eric Crouch for example. Much like Chase Daniel with the spread in high school adapting quickly to it at Mizzou, Crouch did the same thing with the option in Lincoln.
Callahan was a terrible coach and he marks the line in the sand when the program dropped from being a consistent Top 10 program, to a Top 25, to where they are now.
