I am huge local supporter friend. In fact, during my research and writing of an Eight County Over-all Economic Development Program (OEDP) for a Regional Planning Commission where I was the Economic Development Specialist, I noted that in certain areas during the 80's businesses listed as "Proprietors" were getting killed. These were primarily local clothiers and such. So I made some calls and asked when a Macon or Mexico had gotten their Walmart.
Downtown Mexico, Mo e.g. had gotten wiped out. And sure enough direct correlation. Two weeks later, Newsweek runs cover story on impact of Walmarts on local downtown merchants.
I basically stopped shopping at Walmart right then and become huge proponent of shopping local. Here in Brookside we bemoan major chains moving in.
