Unnecessary panic is preferable to unnecessary caution?
I don't follow.
There are many diseases that are easily transmitted and potentially deadly. At this point, we know it's potentially deadly to old people, smokers, or those already in bad health. That's basically the same as pneumonia.
Until there is more data, I won't unnecessarily panic. I will take extra caution by washing my hands and watching what/who I touch. It could very well be unnecessary caution, but it's not much of a risk.
