They had to choose between fighting one of two raving lunatic murders. One (Germany) posed an immediate threat to the free world and through military invasion dominated almost every generally autonomous nation of a Continent. The other murderous nation (USSR) had so far invaded only eastern Poland. FDR and the allies reacted practically and concentrated on Germany first, as they were the greatest immediate threat.
