what motivation is there to build confederate statues some 50-100 years post-end of Civil War? In states that never joined the Confederacy?

I can understand memorials/monuments built in the immediate aftermath, of course. These monuments, statues, etc., are all a part of the "lost cause" movement of the early 20th century that attempted to shift the narrative of the central cause of the Civil War away from Slavery.

Elaborate, please.
