would be a good start. And I agree it will never happen because both sides are addicted to deficit spending.

An across the board cut, except maybe for defense which I would make twice as deep, would be a good start. Stop deficit spending as ordinary first then you can slowly tackle the national debt over 50 years.

Luckily there is some evidence that the world will never see ordinary interest rates again because that would be a major immediate problem with our economy. It's already 10% of the US budget. Yes, 10% for interest payments.
