The team bungled the situation by attacking the reporter and saying nothing inappropriate was done. Then it came out that there were several witnesses and the Astros had to start backtracking.
Then MLB got involved and started looking into it. So it was decided that they needed to get rid of the guy.
If it had been handled better from the start, he might have kept his job. But it was an incredibly stupid thing for an assistant general manager to do in this day and age, so it's hard to feel sorry for him.
