informed decisions for themselves.

A sixteen-year-old is not making informed decisions, most of the time they are making short-sighted emotional decisions. The parents are supposed to be there to help keep their kids from making those kinds of mistakes, not pushing them towards them to prove that they themselves are enlightened.
