University of Texas football coaches basically referred Roland to MU coaches because of Devine’s reputation with black players. UT, and other big time college football programs wouldn’t integrate until 1970. MU signed its first black player 5 years before signing Johnny Roland in 1962. If today’s national recruiting rankings had been around, Roland would very likely be MU’s highest ranked signee ever.
