But I'm well past the point about caring about what you mention.

It happens already. We all know it happens. There's no way to end it. Legalizing and regulating like any other kind of endorsement deal will almost certainly be more effective than outright prohibition. It will be abused, but it will also benefit A LOT of athletes who use the system legitimately.

A potential side-effect that could help college basketball IMO is removing the extreme financial pressure for players to go pro as early as possible. If a college player can sign a six-figure shoe contract and retain eligibility, that might be enough to spend an extra year or two in college. An NBA contract is still millions more, but for a borderline guy who likes college but could use the cash, maybe that's enough. And the college game improves as players stay longer.
