strategy. What were the strategic goals in Korea, Iraq, Vietnam and Afghanistan and what the American capability in each of those wars? Japan was a unique situation. Their Army had been deployed mostly in China and many divisions had been bypassed in the western Pacific region. Those forces were undefeated. American estimates indicated the Japanese retained many divisions of infantry in Japan and these could be expected to concentrate on Kyushu and the Tokyo plain. The IJA was not going to surrender on their home turf after they had fought to the last man in every battle so far. They would have to be defeated where they were and the Americans could do the math on how many American lives it would take to kill off these forces.
