I don't currently favor cancelling student debt.
I do think that college should be made more affordable to those wanting to attend. The lack of conversation about "how to make college cheaper" from the "cancel student debt" crowd baffles me.
FIRST, let's have a conversation about why in the hell tuition is $11,252 at a public in state university, (Mizzou) and what changes we can make such that that tuition price decreases, REGARDLESS of whether the student pays or the government pays.
NEXT, let's re-work the way student loans are made and guaranteed. I suppose it's probably not a good idea for the federal government to guarantee all or even most loans. I also suppose that former students should somehow be able to "bankrupt" their way out of student debt, somehow, some way. Maybe the colleges eat the loss, I don't know.
The problem with these two things is that it will cause a lot fewer students to go to school - because if the government isn't backing up the student debt on the dumb **** degrees, nobody is going to be able to get a loan for Middle London Literature of the late 1630's degrees, for example. This is problematic because universities, especially big universities, have a LOT of fixed costs in buildings.
I don't know what the whole solution is, but my suspicion is that the federal government just writing checks won't fix it.
