from other loans that are unsecured in nature. Credit card debt and interest -- which can be discharged -- , is in the 17%-25% range, and can be lower based on creditworthiness. Because the student debt cannot be discharged, it seems reasonable that it would command a rate lower than 17%.

While I agree that debt could be cancelled with the stoke of a pen, it seems to me that that risk could exist for any debt if it became politically expedient to do so.
