making deals with Fortune 50 companies vs a sales account manager with a software upstart.

The guy with the big accounts at Microsoft brings in far more revenue and gets paid far more for it.

30 years ago Microsoft was much smaller so the sales account manager at IBM was making the big bucks.

If you want to make more, work to drive revenue up.
