He worked very hard. Was commended routinely by the bosses and the government overseers.

He won plaques, trophies, and ribbons.

Eventually he realized that he was making no more money to feed himself and his family, then a old man who was only capable of doing about 1/3 of what he did. Those two made the same, even though the young man was three times as productive.

He did not remain three times as productive.
