to me, that's proper - if nothing else, do oversight to see if the system works or needs to be adjusted.

My problem is with the spin of calling all of these career intelligence guys "treasonous" or "traitors". They probably see bogeymen on every corner, they way cops see criminals in every group. Why? Because of experience and the fact that they've seen a lot more than we have.

Doesn't make them infallible and if they're guilty, then figure that out. But the spin is absolutely ridiculous without a lot more proof than seeking a warrant.
