per conference was allowed in the NCAA tournament. Norm started coaching in 1961. There was a year in which USC was ranked #2 in the nation and didn't make the tournament.

You had to win the conference to make the tournament. Number of times Missouri has won the conference in the 20 years since Norm Stewart retired = 0.

Under the rules in place during the first third of Norm's career Missouri would have zero NCAA appearances since Norm retired.

When they finally expanded to 64 schools in 1985 Norm's teams only missed the tournament 3 times from then until he retired.
