They chose to go to Michigan because it had roughly 15 to 20 legit high major prospects a year while Missouri would have perhaps 4 or 5.
Also, the supposedly was a "deal" with Bill Frieder that Norm would not recruit any kid Frieder was recruiting.
Thirdly, there was a book published about 20-25 years ago (if memory serves, John Feinstein was the author) which stated that Daly and Norm "used" street agents in Detroit to land the Michigan kids. The quid pro pro for the agent was cash. The numbers floated around were in the 25 range per kid. Presumably, the kid or his family got part of the money.
And for what it's worth, there were rummors that cash was involved in landing Keyon Dooling and Clarence Gilbert. If memory serves, the numbers were in the 80K range.
