MU's 1978 team was terrible, and went into the conference tourney in second to last place among Big 8 teams after going 4-10. They were 11-15 overall, losers of 7 of their last 8 games, and after starting out 3-0 had only won back to back games 3 times the rest of the season.

Then they won 3 games in a row to win the Big 8 championship and claim the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tourney. Won the first game by 2 points, the second game by 3 points, and the championship by 3 points in overtime. So it can happen.
