without the ball. Nobody does it any more. It would be a better strategy that what a lot of college teams do now.
I see some interesting strategies in youth ball these days. Many of the best teams essentially play 5 guards...5 point guards in some cases. They usually press like hell and play 5 out. Their strategy is to beat a guy off the dribble for a layup and if somebody helps kick out for the 3. They literally do nothing other than layups or 3's. While they win a lot of games, these kids are not learning all aspects of the game.
There are some teams who do a 5 out motion that is more advanced that what most college teams do. And some of them adapt it to a 4-out with a high post. Some still utilize a 2-post system with a lot of criss crossing and screening inside while utilizing through cuts from the wings instead of just a weave. These kids are learning more basketball than those who camp at the 3 point line and all of these techniques could still be used as a basis for a college team.
It used to not bother me, but today...I hate the weave. Largely because teams do not do it right. They just lazily work back and forth, handing the ball off to each other, forcing very little switching, instead of driving the ball at the guy, cutting close and demanding a switch. Today it has become a time waster where they just hope somebody falls asleep on D.
