By smacking us, the message is sent to the money making programs that NCAA still apparently has some teeth.

How come SMU got the death penalty in the 1980s while the WHOLE Southwest Conference took cheating to a new level?

Because SMU was not a blue blood. They get crushed and the message was sent to Texas, A&M, Arkansas and others.
