I would submit to you that when He said, "Render unto Caesar..." He was certainly commanding His followers to pay their taxes. The Pharisees were trying to get Him to make a statement indicating that loyalty to could only be given to God or to government. His statement reminded them that both God and government had some level of respect due them. Of course, both the individual and government resided under the authority of God. Scripture elsewhere indicates to Christians that they are to respect the governing authorities.
