“It’s just a pride thing for me,” Jackson said. “Being able to out-rebound guys is something I really take pride in. It’s kind of developed over the years. In high school you weren’t really thinking about offensive rebounds, you were just trying to pad your stats. It came over time, especially coming here. Coach was really on me about it, because he feels I’m one of the best rebounders if not the best rebounder in the country.”
Toledo coach Tod Kowalczyk says he is impressed with the attitude that Jackson possesses in embracing rebounding as a way to help out the team.
“His goal for himself personally is to lead the league in offensive rebounding,” Kowalczyk said. “What an unbelievably selfless goal that is. He has an unbelievable knack for rebounding the ball. He has great athleticism. He has tremendous hands. And he’s one of the smartest players we’ve had here. He understands where the ball is coming off and goes and gets it. That’s a talent, there is no question about it.”
“I’ve seen guys miss shots so I know where it’s going to come off,” Jackson said. ”It’s just reps. It’s just like when you are putting up shots. It’s the same thing with rebounding. Most basketball players don’t do workouts just on rebounding – just to know where the ball is going to come off at or if you are supposed to come down with it or tip it back. I do workouts on that and it’s something I really take pride in.”
To call Jackson solely a rebounder doesn’t do him justice as he is the third-leading scorer on the team this season at 12.1 points per game. He is shooting 58.7 percent from the field and in eight games, he has notched five double-doubles.
“He takes high percentage shots and plays within himself and within the system,” Kowalczyk said. “He’s really a good passer and a good playmaker and he doesn’t do things he’s not good at.”
Jackson, who transferred from Missouri and had to sit out half of last season, says this is what he envisioned his role would be when he came to Toledo.
“When I came here I was just big on Coach K’s plan and whatever he had planned for me,” Jackson said. “Double-doubles is what it has been looking like, so that’s what I’ve been going with.”
