science uses a totally different set of standards and I have no knowledge of the others.
The Math standards are excellent and despite what the author stated they are much more rigorous than the previous standards. When we aligned our math classes to the CC standards we had to push much material that was being taught in advanced classes down to lower levels.
Those standards have only been in effect for about four years it is impossible to judge them at this point. The kids I am teaching in HS were not exposed to them until they were in middle school.
Parents hate them because they do not understand them and they have different goals than the standards we were taught. The goal of CC math standards are to have students develop an understanding of numbers at a young age not simply remember an algorithm to get the answer.
The real problem has nothing to do with the standards it is what we do with students who do not meet those standards. The actual answer to that is usually to just move them along so that by the time the get to HS where they start learning to actually use math they are years behind and have no chance to process the information.
Until that practice is stopped it does not matter what set of standards you are teaching to.
I also get tired of the comparisons to other countries. We attempt to teach everyone. In most of the modern world they separate the wheat from the chaff before even attempting to teach these subjects.
