They took over exactly opposite situations... and Pinkel's program was vastly improved in every single area compared to his predecessor, and it was better by week 2 of season 1.

We recruited better. We played better. We played faster. We played stronger. Our special teams was better. We forced more turnovers. We gave up less turnovers. We didn't commit penalties. We started winning on the road in conference. We started beating the North (0-11 last 11 games before he took over). We started immediately making inroads in both KC and STL for the first time in decades.

It was obvious to anyone old enough to remember that time period, that Pinkel (73-37) at Toledo was the man for the job.

Everything about the program was better.

In Odom's case... everything is worse
