for a practice round & official PGA Championship press conference & tour around St. Louis (AB Brewery, Busch Stadium, Arch, etc) in early June & talked about the importance of controlling the driver out of the tee box - driving is a premium & you need to hit the fairways in order to have control with your irons because the greens are really severe & big & a lot will depend on how firm or soft they are & course conditions. Called the Par 3s some of the biggest challenges on the course. Called it a great course.
It still calls for ball control even with changes made by Robert Trent Jones Jr. for the BMW Championship, whose father originally designed the course in the mid 50’s when Bellerive moved to it’s currently location from the original one up closer to where the airport is now in 1897, & other changes made for this PGA Championship over the last 4 years prior to 2018.
The large greens & large bunkers present challenges.
14, 15 & 16 are all tough, great finishing holes & 17, a 603 Par 5, has been described as one of the greatest finishing holes for a Championship by the Chief Championships Officer of the PGA of America, who has led course design for many PGA events & Championships. Should be some fireworks down the stretch there.
