Why is the market shrugging it off? I don’t know, obviously, but it’s interesting to follow.
There is no debate that tariffs are, over the long run, a “tax” on the consumer. So why lower taxes and then throw in tariffs? And why does the market not seem to care? My theory is because the market knows at this point that a Trump is to be taken with a grain of salt. We wants to re-negotiate trade deals and this is how he is doing it.
I have a steel company client I met with today and I asked them about tariffs and their business. I was surprised to hear them say it’s been a non event (so far). They are a small business (roughly 700 employees) so that’s much different obviously than Whirlpool.
But the market is telling us, at least as of now, a trade deal is going to eventually get done. We’ll see. Hate on him all you want, I totally get it, but I wouldn’t bet against him.
