He's often credited with helping revolutionizing the position, which helped pave the way for those guys. When he entered the NFL, there were few guys like him who had ever played, and passing offense's were far less sophisticated.
He and Gronkowski have played a similar number of games (109 vs 102). Winslow has an edge in catches. Gronk has more yards and touchdowns. They play in totally different eras, but San Diego often threw just as much as modern offenses.
Those other guys all have better career numbers, having played more games (all at least double Winslow). But did any of them have a peak where the distance between them and the next-best tight end was as extreme?
