The two gametes, the sperm and the oocyte (egg) each have 23 human chromosomes. They combine producing a single organism, a human being with all 46 chromosomes that that human being will possess for the rest of his or her life.

All that organism needs throughout its life cycle is food, water, and a healthy environment.
