Conferences hoped the regular season champ would not get the automatic bid of the post-season tournament win, and the committee would then have to take an extra team.

This was back when there were 32 teams in the tournament and conferences hoped to get an extra team into the post season. This meant more money for each team.

Plus, the game and TV revenue of a post-season tournament.

The old Big 8 had a preseason tournament in KC over the holiday. Missouri won 8 of those if I recall.
