Actually, for years the Big 8 tournament preceded the season

I do not recall if there was seeding, but it was fun. But there were far fewer teams in the NCAA tourney, and most were the conference champions (based on season records, not conf tournaments. ) Norm Stewart was a big advocate of expansion and end of season tournaments, and for the Big 8 to have the conf tourney winner to get the automatic invite to the NCAA. He felt that would get more than one of our teams in from time to time. Remember, the NCAA started with 8 teams, then 16 then kept getting bigger. But until there were more than 32 teams it was hard to get two or more in from a conference. And MU won it once, maybe twice with a less than 50% conference record, as I recall, and got to go to the dance.
