MPSr has known Romar for a long time - he briefly played for and with Romar on a ministry team after college and stayed with Romar and his wife for a time. In interviews, Porter Sr has stated that it was Romar who showed him what a marriage could really be and led him in his faith life.
There's a great interview with Porter Sr by Mike Kelly on the Inside Mizzou podcast. Porter Sr. says his goal was always to get into the men's game as a coach - Romar offered Porter a job at UW 2 years prior, as well, but Porter didn't think he was ready.
Romar offered again and the package included an almost 300% raise and a travel budget for his family to commute from Seattle to Columbia.
Porter Sr worked in ministry for over 10 years as they raised a family and his wife left an executive level job with HP to raise the family. There was not a lot of money in the Porter family when the kids were young.Being offered a career path on the men's side of the game is a financial no-brainer for anyone.
