Finland succeeded in gaining independence, did a pretty good job of beating the superior number Soviet Army AND successfully remained outside of the Iron Curtain.
Poland gained independence, but got crushed in WWII by both Russia and Germany, the Iron Curtain took on a Polish name; The Warsaw Pact.
