Quantrill arrived with his family in Kansas as settlers from Ohio. He was pro-Union (in fact enlisted) and was pro-abolition until he was exposed to radicalist in Lawrence where he was a school teacher. It was the terroristic tactics of Brown and Lane that turned Quantrill from his early pro-abolition politics.
