Ya know I would have to look it up again, but I was researching Mizzou football history once and reading old newspaper reports.. When the team was started, the oft repeated story about the Tigers being named after a civil war defense group were never mentioned. At the time, the football team was wanting to be known as the "Tigers of the West"- a reference to Princeton. I'd have to do a lot of digging to find it again that I currently don't have time for- so take what I'm typing or leave it. Found it interesting though..
