... display of inept garbage that Odom put out.
That 2015 team could play defense, tackle, block, kick and they were an eyelash from being 8-4 or 7-5. They lost a couple of squeakers. It happens to everybody. Ohio State went 6-7 in Urban's first year. Texas is lucky to win more than 6 games these days. Notre Dame went 4-8 last year.
The problem with the 2015 team is that we were in transition, having to replace so many offensive players that left the 2013 and then 2014 team.
It was the third totally new set of starters in three years. Something that doesn't usually happen, but can. And some struggling is expected among freshman and inexperienced youngsters.
They lost all their receivers from 2013-14. Jimmy Hunt, Bud Sasser, Darius White, DGB... all gone. They were breaking in a true freshman at QB in Lock. Hansborough hurt himself on the first play of the season and was hobbled the entire time. We lost Marcus Murphy to graduation.
So you are asking how we struggled, breaking in an entire new offense that had practically zero experience or health?
Not a surprise. That 2015 team was still a competitive team.
The 2016-17 team, run by Odom's staff has ruined everything. He inherited a strong group of defensive players... installed a new defense, and turned them into a miserable group of soft tacklers that can't read the plays well, learn the assignments, or get off blocks.
The offense doesn't block. The kickers can't even make PATs.
These are things that never, ever, ever occurred during any of Pinkel's tenure. Not during his early days... not in 04, not in 2015.
The 2016 and 2017 offense is proof enough that the talent was there, it was just very young in 2015 and inexperienced, going up against SEC opponents. The O-line rebounded after one year. Lock was much better. They receivers they had recruited were showing their talent. They could move the ball.
I see zero sign that Pinkel's recruiting took a hit.
It's a shame Rhodes went with Odom instead of either a real Head Coach that had experience and credibility. Or someone from Pinkel's long-time staff that would have kept the band together.
