There's no better marketing tool for a university than having success in those two sports. They help to recruit high-quality students and faculty more than you and most people realize. It's not a coincidence that our enrollment peaked when our FB and BB programs were both nationally competitive (under MA in BB, Pinkel in FB).
I agree that the university has issues on the academic side that need to be addressed and properly funded, and that science, math, and engineering should be a greater priority. We have brand new leadership working on that — hopefully they aren't as incompetent as their predecessors.
