I would say it worked like a charm. Like him or not you have to admit that Comey is a drama queen who absolutely loves the spotlight. I do not believe that Comey planned to go before the committee and outright lie to them. But I do think he may have been tempted to stretch the facts a bit to make himself look like the hero. Did Trump's statement effect his testimony in any way? We will never know that but if Trump was threatening to release tapes of their conversations then the absolute worst it could do is force him to tell the truth.
Trump did not lie about the tapes because he never actually claimed to have them. It was simply a gambit to force the hand of someone he did not trust to be absolutely truthful.
