He is very unlike most other coaches. Agree with him or not, you get an honest answer from him and he says what's on his mind. And he doesn't shy away from difficult subjects. Most other coaches are far more circumspect and politically correct. And this approach gets EE in trouble sometimes and has led to him being very misunderstood, IMO, and attacked unfairly by other fans and the media.
You probably recall a few years back when he gave an extensive interview on the challenges he had, personally, with coaching female athletes, and coaching softball in general, as opposed to men's softball, and baseball. Very honest and from the heart, but there was a lot of backlash because of it. Unfairly I thought, because you almost never see male coaches addressing the same subject in public, although I guarantee most if not all of them would agree in large part with what EE said.
Sometimes (often) he's his own worst enemy. But what you see is what you get.
